After working 16 years in Administrative and Training field in the San Francisco Bay Area, I realized my schedule was not working for myself nor for my family. My typical day:
With office hours from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, carpooling meant I could leave for work as late as 5:25 AM from Alameda -- a commuters dream. Allowing me to sleep until 4:30 AM. I was home by 4:00 PM most days. From work I'd go to the gym, to work out, and shower. Arriving home just in time to have dinner on the table by 6:30 PM.
By then, my husband, John would have returned home from his job with Scott and Rachel, our 2 children. He would have them bathed and ready for dinner. After dinner, approximately 7:00 PM, one of us would help our son, then in second grade, with his home work.
On week days we had nearly one hour with our children before their bedtime. Not to mention, after the kids were in bed, we did housework or errands before going to sleep. When I traveled on business, my husband was burdened with even more responsibilities. So we hired a sitter which was expensive yet not nearly as costly as losing several days with my family.
"The very best part of this story is, I work from home and schedule my hours."
Donnaluci@homebis.com By January 1994, it was apparent my job would move to Boulder, Colorado. My position would be taken over by ISSC, the sister company to IBM.
It was no surprise that IBM would offer to provide services and support on a contractual basis thereby eliminating Southern Pacific having its' own Information Service department. Southern Pacific believed such a move to be cost-effective, yet, it was just one of the many decisions which eventually lead to the weakening of Southern Pacific - since taken over by Union Pacific.
"I completed sales for $2,000,000 my first year. I have maximum flexibility. From Jan. 1998 until Aug. 11, 98 I've sold 50 houses "I left Southern Pacific on March 31, 1994.
On April 1, 1994, I enrolled as a full-time student at our local Junior College. Initially I received very little encouragement and much criticism from my family, friends and co-workers. The two comments I heard most often, were "You're 35 and too old to start college!" or, "You'll never see your money from such a venture."
All my requirements are completed and I graduated May 1997 from the University of San Francisco with a BA in Organizational Behavior. Even though I'd been a full-time student I worked and completed transactions for 2 million in real estate sales in 1996.
I set my own schedule...The best part of this story is that I am able to work from home and schedule my own hours. I invested in a fully equipped home office and have no need to go into the real estate office except for weekly staff meetings. My option!
I set my own schedule, my hours and have maximum flexibility. I love it.
Volunteering at our children's school is a new luxury I have 3 days per month . I cannot begin to express just how beneficial having a parent involved with school activities has been for them. Since I'm at my childrens' school at different times of the day, often other moms assume I do not work, until they know me.
There is one drawback ... it's not a big deal being able to play golf in the middle of the day unless someone else can play too.
